Greece has its own single cultural identity although lends many of its influence to the Roman and the Byzantine Empires. Often referred to as the birthplace of western culture, Greece can be credited with the belief in government and trial by jury while also with ideals of beauty in art.
Flights operate daily on a number of different airlines from Auckland. There are no direct flights from New Zealand, so the duration depends on what airlines and routing you take.
Air: Olympic Airlines have the monopoly and operate between many towns and cities.
Bus: There is a comprehensive bus network that operates on both the mainland and the islands.
Car & Motorcycle: With a high road fatality rate, driving in Greece can be a hair-raising experience!
Boat: Over the summer months there are a vast number of ferries that operate between the mainland and the many islands. Ferries operate but less frequently in the winter months.
Train: Trains in Greece operate over two mainlines, the service is limited but of a good standard.
Athens: Sophisticated and cosmopolitan the capital of Greece never fails to impress. Significant cultural monuments are a draw-card, but it’s the cultural revival and hedonistic lifestyle that really gives Athens its edge.
Corfu: One of the Ionian Islands, Corfu inspires with its seductive landscapes. Once a playground for the world’s elite, Corfu is now a popular tourist destination.
Crete: Historically diverse, Crete is renowned for the ruins, fortresses, mosques and Byzantine monasteries that weave a rich tapestry of local culture.

Santorini: Situated on the remains of one of the world’s largest volcanic eruptions, Santorini is famous for its landscapes and sunsets. Consistently topping lists for the world’s best island, Santorini never ceases to captivate and amaze.
Greece’s climate is classified as Mediterranean. However the varied geography of Greece leads to a range of microclimates. Mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine and low rainfall are all typical and summers are hot and dry.
The weather on the Aegean and Ionian islands is milder than the mainland. Summer brings with it a seasonal wind called the meltemi, that cools dry hot days and is perfect for sailing.
In summer months temperatures can soar above 40˚C in some areas. While winter can bring with it snow and rain from mid October until February.
