Singapore is a modern city-state and Island country in Southeast Asia. Situated off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, the country consists of the diamond shaped main island commonly known as Singapore Island, and more than 60 smaller islets. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 as a trading post of the East India Company. The British obtained sovereignty over the island in 1824, but was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and became independant from the United Kingdom in 1963. Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons, high humidity and uniform temperatures that range from 22 to 35°C.
Singapore is a unique mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and western cultures with Buddism the most widely practiced religion. The total population as of mid 2014 was about 5.47 million people, 40% of which were not born in Singapore. Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil.
