About South Africa

South Africa is a diverse and vast country that’s landscape offers an abundance of natural wonders rich with wildlife. Though many travel to South Africa for its many outdoor pursuits and attractions, the cities are a hive of activity, offering pockets of modern hedonism mixed in with a plethora of culture and history.  Being the most developed country in Africa, it is the perfect introduction to the continent.

South Africa’s People and Lifestyle

Rising from a turbulent past of cultural unrest, South Africa’s people are among some of the most welcoming in the world. A multilingual country there are officially 11 languages, English is the most widely understood.

A cultural melting pot the diversity of South Africa’s people is matched by its varied landscapes. Colonised but the Dutch, there is a large Afrikaans population and the culture that has emerged is a mix of Black African culture that has taken influence from the work of Christian missionaries.

There are a large number of native ethnic groups each with their own tribal culture known for their art, dance and music.

South Africa – Getting There

South Africa is the major hub and portal for the rest of the continent with a number of international airports with flights operating from around the world daily. Johannesburg International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, Durban International Airport and Mpumalanga Kruger International Airport are the main international airports.

South Africa – Getting Around

Bus: The main public transports in South Africa, there are a number of reliable networks between major cities.

Car: In our opinion hiring a car is the best way to get around South Africa. Offering wide-open roads and the freedom to do what you want with the added bonus of inexpensive car rental through a number of rental car dealerships.

Train: There is a regular train service between major cities run by Spoornet. Trains are a reliable safe way to get around the country.

Air: The main airline carrier in South Africa is South African Airways offering an extensive network of flights around the country. Flying is not cheap but it will get you from point A to B quickly.

South Africa – Popular Destinations

Cape Town: The second largest city in South Africa, Cape Town is known as ‘The Mother City’ and is home to scenic wonders such as Table Top Mountain and a number of the countries top restaurants.  A romantic and beautiful city, best appreciated outdoors.

Durban: South Africa’s quintessential beachside playground Durban is urban and gritty. The cosmopolitan city is a striking mix of colonial buildings and mosques, bazaars and temples.

Johannesburg: The vibrant heart of South Africa, Jo’burg, as it is commonly referred to, is the economic powerhouse of the country. Though stark reminders of its apartheid past are evident, Johannesburg is a city that is on the rise and is one of South Africa’s most compelling cities.

Pretoria: Once the heart of the apartheid regime, Pretoria is a leafy and peaceful city offering a slower pace and fascinating architecture.
