The city of Dunedin stands on the hills and valleys surrounding the head of Otago Harbor. The harbor and hills are the remnants of an extinct volcano. This city houses the University of Otago, one of the oldest universities in the world. Dunedin is home to Baldwin Street, which, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is the steepest street in the world with a gradient of 1 in 2.9. This city possesses a unique combination of cultural riches, fine architecture, and world-famous wildlife reserves on the Otago Peninsula.
The city has the magnificent Scottish Edwardian architecture that can be seen in its heritage buildings - St Paul's Cathedral, the restored Town Hall, Dunedin Railway Station, Larnach Castle 13 kilometers from the city centre, and Olveston house. Dunedin offers some interesting attractions, which include Monarch Wildlife Cruises, Taieri George Railway, NZ Marine studies centre, and Aquarium, etc. This city has achieved a status by WWF as among the rarest cities that have been successfully leading the conservation programme for yellow-eyed penguin and royal albatross.
